Life’s Transitions

  • The first time you do something is a huge milestone, but often filled with apprehension.
  • Get through a first experience with a helpful partner, and then you will continue on to do a task better and bolder hundreds times over.
  • Find a great mentor, and become a great mentor/trainer yourself to give back in kind.
  • Difficult times are not an easy part of life, but think broad picture and notice how friends, family, community members, and colleagues come together to get through the hard stuff.

Origins of the Unknown

  • Just like Bob Ross coined the term, “happy accidents”, small ideas can often turn into big endeavors.
  • Paul originally began a dentist study club with the simple mission of, “If we all get together when we’re young, we won’t hate each other when we’re older.”
  • Let your priorities and passion guide you to create a need. Nurture it, be inclusive, be authentic, be engaged, and big results can take place.
  • Put a lot of genuine thoughts out on social media to create extremely engaged groups and communities.

A Love of Learning

  • Continual learning is valuable, but it is also necessary to look at the models of how instruction is designed and find ways to make it better.
  • How dentistry is taught doesn’t spark creativity or promote competence.
  • The main way traditional instruction can improve is to be supportive of students. Practice the belief: there are not scenarios where things have gone terribly wrong, they have just gone off script.
  • A learner should not believe they are bad at something, just that they’re not where they want to be yet.
  • Avoiding a course for continued learning because of the cost must be eliminated. Invest in the course, in yourself, and the ROI will be well worth it.
  • If you talk with someone successful, they will always say they wish they had become successful earlier. Spend money in education to speed up your process to success.

What Happens if you do Nothing

  • Make decisions with certainty by visualizing what will happen if you do not make a choice.
  • For example: If you don’t invest early on, you could end up homeless. If you don’t get dental implants, you can’t chew and will be in pain.
  • The best decision a young professional/dentist can make early on in their career is to go to the professional they respect the most and learn from them.
  • The money might not be the highest at first, but in an environment with the top professional, you will learn the most to propel a meaningful career. It becomes the best money move.
  • Use the flexibility usually found as a young adult as the time to set the foundation for your 40s and 50s.

Best Quotes:

“Your first of everything, driving a car…school days, things like that are such important milestones in our life and they come with a lot of apprehension. But we know what’s on the other side is good. You just need someone to guide you through that and get you over that hump.” (2:14)

“I’ve always just thought of it [Facebook] as my own personal journal. I used to have journals when I was younger because I like to record thoughts and now you can get feedback on your thoughts and ideas. And that was how I distinguished myself.” (12:17)

“It seems like what you’re doing is; you ran with an idea, you weren’t afraid to continue running with it. You got some response, you iterated, and you kept going, and the next thing you know you’ve got 16,000 people eating nachos with you.” (13:22)

“I just try really hard to create an environment where people feel comfortable sharing and having their ideas challenged but not them attacked as a person.” (15:57)

“A dental school instructor would say, ‘That’s not right. You’re never going to get it. Why would you do that?’ And I just despise that. So when people fall or things go sideways, be there to help them out.” (19:11)

“When you talk to someone who’s been successful, they always say they wish they did it sooner.” (22:09)

“Put yourself in an environment where you can learn in a meaningful way from a top chef or good dentist so that when you buy a practice you can replicate that.” (27:29)
