Pathway to Success

  • Marty identified a successful person in the neighborhood when he was just a boy to ask questions about what activities lead to success.
  • At some point success plateaus as a one-person shop and this is when to bring on staff to delegate and consistently scale.
  • Even when a business gets large, the focus always needs to remain about the one-on-one experience with clients.
  • Success as a salesperson comes back to authenticity and building relationships, not making sales.
  • The golden rule of business success is based on 4 things: Show up on time. Do what you say. Finish what you start. Please and thank you.

Thinking of Tomorrow

  • Most people do not accumulate real wealth because they simply lack the discipline to do it.
  • Being a voracious saver and planning for worst case scenarios results in enjoying present life, and sleeping well because you can be secure in knowing future life is going to be great as well.
  • Saving early is important, but saving systematically is even more important.
  • Don’t let social media be a confidence killer when it comes to saving. Just because people seem to have it all, doesn’t mean it’s an inappropriate time for you to start saving.

Building a Team

  • Most business owners have healthy confidence in what they do, but having a team’s livelihood dependent on your shoulders is a big deal. Hire slowly and with care.
  • Next hire the people to run the administration of your business so you can get back to your core competency. Spend your time doing your unique ability.
  • Your unique ability is what you are a natural at and find immense enjoyment in. Delegate everything else to other people.
  • While operating in your unique ability, you must ensure your staff is having a good experience. Do this through team outings, fair compensation, and customized benefits.
  • It is helpful to have dedicated staff to employee engagement and culture, however, any business owner who completely removes themselves from this sector is making a huge mistake. It needs to be a collaborative effort.

Currency of Connection

  • Even though revenue is a KPI, Marty never talks about how profitable a client is with the team.
  • Every client should be treated the same no matter how small or large they are.
  • It is the small details which make or break a relationship or an account.
  • The rarest thing in the world today is companies who are willing to spend time with a client, and willing to think about the client when they’re not directly involved. It is novel to think of your client outside of your offerings and how you can help.
  • At the end of the day, the most important thing is to help people, advocate for them, actually care and connect, and figure out what’s really good for them.

Best Quotes:

“People are out there working principally because they need to generate income to either maintain their lifestyle or plan for tomorrow. And a good part of our business is making sure if things go wrong, that protections are in place to make sure that things keep going well.” (4:43)

“I got passionate about 10 years in and realized I need to grow up beyond me. Otherwise I’d just be a one man show.” (6:09)

“At the end of the day I write business for companies with thousands of employees. But it’s always about a one-on-one experience I have with people that starts everything, from understanding what people need all the way through to, ‘Hey, they’re going to grow to become business owners, professionals.’” (6:39)

“I always wanted to make sure that if I met somebody, engage with them, and I tried to set up situations that were good for them, regardless of whether it was an opportunity for me.” (8:16)

“But I really do four things and it’s only four things my business does: Show up on time. Do what I say. Finish what I start. And please and thank you.” (9:14)

“I see people don’t accumulate any kind of real wealth because they don’t have the discipline to do it, and they don’t create environments to do it automatically.” (10:45)

“I think there’s two kinds of people in the world. There’s people who eat well and people who sleep well, and it’s very seldom for a business owner professional that you do both.” (14:49)

“The biggest leap of faith you can make…and the biggest leap of confidence you can make…is when you do hire and you begin to focus on your unique abilities, whatever it is that you do, and you delegate things that aren’t in your specialty.” (19:15)

“It’s critically important today to make sure your employees are having a great experience doing something that they feel purposeful. That they’re getting accolades, that they’re getting a sense of achievement, that they’re not walking away from their job or overwhelmed or feeling debilitated.” (22:23)

“I think any business owner who’s removing themselves from that process [employee culture/engagement] is really making a mistake by not being engaged with their people because I think when it’s all said and done, it’s about people. We’re not machines.” (24:33)

“At the end of the day, this is all we have – is to help people, and advocate for them, and actually care and connect, and figure out what’s really good for them. And I think that’s the rarest thing in the world today.” (33:27)
