Jay’s Start
- As a 7th generation entrepreneur, it wasn’t if Jay was going to go out on his own, but when.
- When he found out his best friend was diagnosed with brain cancer, he decided it was time to quit and start his own company – he hasn’t worked for anyone else since.
- Jay believes in retaining his clients by taking really good care of them.
- Instead of working to get lots of new clients, he works to keep his current clients happy.
- “Find something that you love. If you find something you love, you’ll figure out how to be good at it and then you can learn to make money from it.”
Hiring the Right People
- Jay has had an increasing top-line revenue number for 18 years in a row across 3 companies – having a great team helps them to take care of their clients the right way.
- Jay has a team of 14 people that all work remotely.
- A lot of his team comes from referrals and have worked with larger companies, but want to live differently and work less.
- Candidates are screened by a couple of people in the company and then given “homework” to be completed within 48 hours – it’s a great gauge to see where people are at.
- As long as they have 30% of the revenue needed to pay someone, they will bring them on with the intention that they are going to grow into the needed revenue.
Be the Unexpected
- It’s important as a business owner to understand the value of marketing.
- Some business owners don’t know how to measure their marketing ROI – but they really should invest in finding out what the ROI actually is.
- The customer experience is one of the most important aspects of a business.
- If customers have a good experience, they are going to come back and refer you to others.
- There are lots of ‘good’ businesses – an amazing customer experience is what sets you apart and that’s unexpected.
