An entrepreneur since the age of 21, Gino has had an obsession for learning what makes businesses and entrepreneurs thrive. At 25 he took over the family business, which was deeply in debt and in need of help. After turning the company around and running it for seven years, he and his partners successfully sold the company. Gino then set out to help entrepreneurs and leaders get what they want from their businesses. Based on his years of real-world experience, he created the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a practical method for helping companies achieve greatness.

EOS Worldwide is an organization that helps tens of thousands of businesses implement EOS with the aid of an international team of over 350 professional and certified EOS Implementers and online support. There are over 100,000 companies using the EOS tools worldwide. He has personally delivered more than 1,900 full-day sessions for more than 135 companies, helping them implement EOS.

He is also the author of the award-winning, best-selling book Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business, as well as Get a Grip, Rocket Fuel, How to Be a Great Boss and What the Heck is EOS?, which have sold more than one million copies. Gino is now devoting time and energy toward helping entrepreneurs-in-the-making get a huge jump-start on taking their entrepreneurial leap, which is why he created Entrepreneurial Leap. The mission of Entrepreneurial Leap is to find all of the entrepreneurs-in-the-making, at any age, wherever they are—to help them realize their purpose and live the life they were born to live.

Entrepreneurial Leap – Wickman’s newest book

  • Wickman’s passion is helping anyone out there who is an entrepreneur in the making at any age take a better leap, increase their odds of success, and help them start and run a great business as long as they have what it takes.
  • Justin calls Wickman’s book a “paint-by-numbers” – including paint, paintbrush, canvas, easel, everything – which provides the entire process to becoming a successful entrepreneur, all the reader has to do is implement the process.
  • The book is also great for current business owners, as it brings them back to who they are and why they started their business and can reinvigorate them.
  • The book features three main components. First you confirm you have the six traits needed to be a successful entrepreneur. Then you get a glimpse at what you can do with those traits
  • Finally you are set on the path to success – all you need to do is implement the tools Wickman provides.

Building Your Own Business

  • Wickman’s book lists six traits good entrepreneurs must possess. If you don’t have them, you won’t succeed. Wickman admits he breaks hearts, but better to have your heart broken early than spend years building a business that ultimately fails.
  • Only 14% of businesses actually grow using outside money and investors. It is better for entrepreneurs to do it on their own, the “bootstrap” method. It may take longer, but it will be worth it in the long run because you control your own business.
  • It may seem like “getting rich quick” is the only type of business you hear about, but really 90% of those businesses ultimately fail.

Self-Doubt and Building Confidence

  • Wickman again discusses needing the six traits to be a successful entrepreneur, and if you don’t have those, your doubts may be justified. He believes only about 4% of people actually have the six traits needed for success.
  • You will receive outside criticism, and you have to take it with a grain of salt. Run any feedback you receive through your personal filter and glean from it what is right for you and your personal business and goals.
  • Be honest with yourself about what you want and what kind of business you want to have. We are not all Elon Musk. Some of us are better with a 200 person company, some just want to be a sole proprietor. You need to be honest about what is best for you.

Best Quotes:

“(On his new book) I want to give you a tool. I want to do all the thinking for you so that you can just take the tool, implement it and run. You don’t need to figure out why it works, how it works, you just do it so you can focus on building a great business.”

“It [your business] is your baby, it’s your thing. You have full freedom to go do your thing. And yes, it might take three to 10 times longer to build it, but it’s worth it. It’s absolutely worth it because one of the other disciplines I’m teaching in this book, entrepreneurial leap is tenure thinking in the power of tenure thinking. So I’m getting people to stop thinking about now, this month, this quarter, this year. Take a 10 year outlook and you can build anything in 10 years, do it bootstrap, don’t get outside money.”

“Take criticism from others with a grain of salt. As you go charging forward, it’s the people that are closest to you that are going to be the most negative people in your life. They’re scared for you, the conservative ones in your life. They’re going to cast their doubt. They’re going to be critics and you have to take it with a grain of salt.”
