San Francisco-based Alden Mills began taking control of his life at age twelve, when his doctor told him to learn chess because his asthma would keep him from playing sports. His first goal was to conquer the asthma, and he went on to achieve extraordinary things in sports, academics, military service, business, and philanthropy.

Alden became a nationally ranked rower, a gold medalist in the Olympic Festival, and captain of the freshman and varsity teams at the U.S. Naval Academy. As a Navy SEAL he led his platoon through multiple missions.

After discharge from the military, he founded Perfect Fitness and led it to growth of over 12,000% annual sales of $90 million, and Inc. magazine recognition as the fastest-growing consumer products in America in just three years. He developed over 40 patents, including the Perfect Pushup, Perfect Pullup, Perfect Sit-up and Perfect Ab Carver.

Alden’s books include Be Unstoppable: The 8 Essential Actions to Succeed at Anything and Unstoppable Teams: The Four Essential Actions of High-Performance Leadership.

Rising to the Occasion

  • Alden accepted what the doctor said when he told Alden he needed to play chess because of his asthma
  • But Alden’s mother told him no one could define what he could or couldn’t do, but himself.
  • Live outside the comfort zone. People are scared of uncertainty, the unknown, hard work, and pain.
  • Take the emphasis off the negative to succeed.
  • Rowing is similar to business because at the start you have to exert the maximum effort and learn all the nuances.

Focus on the Right Things

  • A business person should never forget the “why” of the reason they got into business in the first place.
  • A focus solely on growth causes a hollowness and will result in burnout.
  • Remember the problem your business solves for a customer.
There are dual internal voices, a whiner and a whisperer. The whiney voice focuses on what could go wrong and the negative, the whisperer says to keep at it, find another way, stay committed.

Invest in Yourself

  • Before Alden successfully launched a product, he first successfully lost almost all his money.
  • He believed in himself and took the risk of investing all he had left into the innovation because he knew if he didn’t, he would regret it.
  • The metaphor of jumping out of a plane is a perfect parallel to the act of going all in. When you go all in, you get laser focus. New ways of figuring things out appear.
  • Getting a team of people to invest in your vision can be a challenge. You must attach an emotional connection to the goals in order for an effective shared ownership and empowerment to take place.

Best Quotes:

“Sometimes you don’t want to play it safe, right? You want to take the risk. You want to go outside that comfort zone. And that’s where life really starts is outside the comfort zone.”

“Everybody knows of your success. They don’t know of all the failures and all the practice you had in the preparation of finally getting to that point.”

“The big difference between someone that’s kind of a want-to-be business owner to an average business owner, to someone that has gone to unbelievable lengths is that they’re willing to pay the price.”

“It is a law of nature, for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. That means for every amount of uncertainty that we’re dealing with, there is an equal amount of opportunity.”
